Because Grace commanded so much respect, there was always most total silence when she arrived on set, but she never distanced herself from others, and she was enormously friendly to everyone — no stuffy attitude, no star complex. As for her talents, Grace acted the way Johnny Weissmuller swam or Fred Astaire dance — she made it look easy. And she probably went through life being completely misunderstood, since she usually said exactly what she meant. (Cary Grant)

We are so accustomed to believe that crime and violence are characteristic of male characters only that the idea of seeing the ultimate devil personified in a woman, and a mother, quite amused me during the writing process. For the part of Julian’s mother I always had Kristin in mind. I met her in Paris and started thinking about how interesting it would be to make her character a strange mix between Lady Macbeth and Donatella Versace. And of course, Kristin was incredibly happy to play the character of a badass, authoritarian and diabolic mother. - Nicolas Winding Refn

During the filming of Dark Passage, Lauren Bacall had hurt the feelings of cameraman, Sid Hickox after of a comment made about the way he filmed one of the scenes. So director Delmer Daves decided to show Bacall that she knew less about film making than she was beginning to believe.

“I decided to teach Betty a lesson. We lined up for her last scene in the film- one in which Bogie is suposed to telephone her from a bus depot and she gets the call in her apartment. Since it was an important scene, she was anticipating a big close-up, but I told her we were going to photograph her from the back so that the audience could imagine what was going on in her mind. ‘With my back to the camera?’ she said. Tears came into her eyes, but she was a great sport about it and rehearsed it, even though her voice was trembling and she was fighting to hold back the tears. That broke me up and I relented. ‘For God’s sake, Betty, we’re lit for the front,’ I told her . ‘I just wanted to teach you a lesson because you were so cruel to Sid’ ‘I know I was.’ Tears started to come into her eyes, which was just perfect, and that’s how we shot the scene. A few minutes later Bogie came on the set. He saw her sobbing and followed her to her dressing room. When it was time for him to come on set, he had on his great Bogie face- no emotion. Usually, he was a one-take actor, but this time he kept blowing his lines and apologizing. We finally got the scene after eight takes and Bogie came over and said ‘I’m sorry about letting you down but you know what was bothering me. Betty told me what happened, and the kid can still break me up. But I think you did the right thing. Maybe she was getting a bit too big in the britches.’ “

-Delmer Daves, director of Dark Passage.

So many lovely aspects about this!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY HUMPHREY BOGART & LAUREN BACALL

One night in 1953, Bogie, John Huston and some other friends were shooting the breeze rather tipsily about life and its meaning and the question arose as to whether there was any time of their lives they’d like to live over again. All of them except Bogie came up with cynical answers. Somebody said, “God forbid”. Somebody else: that he’d only like to cancel out a couple of times. Then Bogie spoke. “Yes, there’s a time I’d like to relive- the years that I have had with Betty.”

-Joe Hyams, Bogart & Bacall.

I was a kid in love for the first time. I was easy for me - I knew nothing about pitfalls. I was giving nothing but myself and I could do that without qualm. Never in my life had or has a man cared so much for me, wanted so much to protect me, surrond me with life’s joys, share everything. It made me want to return the care- to show him it was possiblle to be really happy with a woman, to give him children. I was determined to do that.

-Lauren Bacall

Ryan and I become one person when we work. Directing can be very intimate. Q.Why do you two seem to connect so well? Why did I marry that woman? Well, I fell in love, and that was that. - Nicolas Winding Refn
